Targeted Therapies in Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. This damage disrupts the ability of parts of the nervous system to communicate, resulting in a range of signs and symptoms, including physical, mental, and sometimes psychiatric problems.

Types of Treatment Available In India.

Currently, the United States National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation, describes four types of MS

• Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS)
• Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS)
• Primary progressive MS (PPMS)
• Secondary progressive MS (SPMS)

The available disease-modifying therapies used to treat MS are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat “relapsing forms” of MS, which include RRMS as well as progressive MS in those individuals who continue to experience relapses. One of the medications has also been approved to treat PPMS. Scientists around the world are actively working to find more effective treatments for progressive forms of MS — and addressing the challenges of progressive MS is a primary target of the Society’s research strategy.
